Installing Live Pack in 8 and 9
Ableton Live gave users a powerful tool to make and install Live Packs. A Live pack is basically a self contained Live Project that has all the files and racks found within it. It can be a great tool to share a track with a collaborator, buy new complex sound packs, or share instruments. This tutorial will run through how to install a Live Pack. Here is a quick video on this, or the text walk through below itl. To install a live pack you can do one of two things. First would be to open Ableton Live 8 or 9. Then navigate to the File Menu. There you can choose "Install live pack" and then navigate through the browser to the pack you wish to install. Or you can double click any live pack to automatically open Ableton Live and start installing. After that you will be asked to choose where to download the Set. It will then install all files and folders to this place. When it is done, the installation window will close and you will be left on the
Sausage Fattener and Harmonic Exciting
Have you ever wanted to make the perfect music for a sausage fest. Like total bro'ed out loud music? Well this is the thing for you... Sausage Fattener. Seriously though, this is an amazing VST. It's only $30 on their site and has a lot of uses. The Sausage Fattener VST adds a nice mixture of Harmonic Exciting, Wave shaping, and compression. It's really easy to use. I find "overusing" this to add a crunchy element to my kick or bass as a juxtaposition to my other lighter elements is awesome. Here is DADA Lifes words on the VST: The Sausage Fattener only has two knobs. But don’t be fooled. With those seemingly simple parameters you can create loads of different sounds. Use the Sausage Fattener on a single channel with moderate settings as a musical compressor. Turn it up and you have a dirty bastard of distortion. But you can also use the plugin on a bus (for example all the drums and the bass) or the whole track as a mastering plugin. The Sausage Fattener is used by Tiësto, Kaskade,
Teaching at Decibel Festival
This month I am teaming up with Ableton Live and Decibel Festival. On Friday the 26th we are holding a day of classes that is about all things ableton. I will be teaching a class on Humanizing the Machine, using ableton live, as well as hosting a music panel. Other instructors include Jake Perrine, Vespers, and others. Check out the event page on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/537193553017894/ As we get closer to the event I will be handing out giveaways, more ableton tips, and more.
Retro Drums – Free Vintage Drum Racks
Of late I've been really inspired by the sounds of the 80's. I even watched the movie Xanadu last night for inspiration. What a terribly awesome movie by the way. I've been loving the vintage tape sounds, lush synth pads, and striking percussion. I've had a chance to work with some analog drum machines to make Live Drum Racks for my production. The drum machines were the Alesis HR16, LinnDrum, and Simmons Crash Trap. I've spent time processing the one shots, 76 in total, and putting them in drum racks with Macro controls for Ableton Live 9. I'm really proud of how these racks turned out and wanted to share them with you all. Hope to inspire some rad chillwave and glo-fil, been really digging that genre of late. Download the files for free below. I also have the one shot samples for use in any DAW including Live 8 in a ZIP file below. Stone Clacks and Wooden Cracks – Drum Racks
I absolutely love field recordings and getting some unique sounds spliced up into a drum rack. This summer I played a lot of festivals. When I was out in these amazing spaces I took the time to record something cool. Such as cracking wood at Awaken and crashing rocks at Luminocity. I spliced up my adventures and made some cracking drum racks for you all. From my recordings at Luminosity, on Vancouver Island, I made a drum rack with stones bouncing and breaking. It's got a cool quality to it for percussion and snare. Below is a free download if you sign up on the site. The Live Pack comes with a ready to use Drum Rack or download the original 16 samples for use with any DAW. Download Stone Samples Download Stone Clacks And Wooden Cracks I also made a drum rack using the sound of crackling wood and sticks in California at Awaken. I had the pleasure of releasing this through Jamie, aka Kilowatts and Dan of Aligning Minds new site called Deeply Subjective Music. Download the rack for free from there and check out the
Future Step MIDI Library
I have fallen back in love these past few months. As the summer heat has lead to lazy days and dance filled nights I have been swooning over 2step and Future Bass music. I used to love this music back in 2008 with Point B and other amazing Uk artists. Now I am diving back into my appreciation of the genre. Over the past few months I have made a huge library of MIDI Patterns as well as a sample library of unique one shots for my Ableton Live Drum Racks. Now I am excited to share the fruit of my labor with you. Below is a free download of the Future Step MIDI Library as well as some demo one shots. Also Just added one of the Instrument Racks I made for my Future Step Ableton Pack for Live 9. It is a 2 step Snare for Drum Rack that lets you use a Macro Knob to select different snare sounds. This huge collection of data should get you started. These will work with any DAW.
