Don’t get me wrong, articles and videos are great, but that is only one way of learning. Over the years I have picked up a lot from different books on music production. A well written book can let you take the information in at your speed and can unpack some big concepts. I believe these books will greatly help your music, creativity, and life. The Daily Adventures of Mixerman I started with this book because it is a hell fun read. I was just so captivated by this story and the characters. It also gives you a very interesting look at the life of a mixing engineer. The book is basically a diary of Mixerman, an engineer. I am not sure if it is 100% true to actual events, but it is definitely a fun read and has some great insights in the industry. Free Water Sample Library and Live Template
I am kinda into water... it's like my thing. The first album I made as Subaqueous I used water recordings for percussion and snare samples. It was a really cool way for me to play with water on my front lawn and make some beats. Over the years I have traveled all over the world and grabbed field recordings of water for my music. I've put together a free / by donation Live Pack and Sample Library of these sounds. What inspired me to do this is the protest in North Dakota against the pipeline. The Native Americans of that area are protesting an oil pipeline that puts their water source and sacred land at risk. This issue is also bigger than that. It's about how we treat water and protect it for future generations. I wanted to share my love of nature, water, and help inspire other musicians to join in this very important conversation. Silk Drop Remix Competition
Shout out to the music producers out there. I’ve teamed up with Loopmasters, PluginBoutique, LANDR, Melodics, AfroDjMac, and Novation to present a new remix competition for Silk Drop. Winners of the remix contest will have their track appear on the official remix album. Both a grand prize winner and a runner-up will be chosen to appear on the release. The Grand Prize winner will, in addition, receive prizes from Subaqueous store, Novation, Loopmasters, LANDR, and more. Submissions are due by October 10th, 2016. Separating your Drum Parts with Extract Chains
I love showing off this quick trick. When I start mixing my drums I usually like to separate my kick and other elements. There is a hard way to do this, and a quick way. The quick way is using the Extract Chains option in the drum rack. Below is a video walk-through of using the Extract Chains in Ableton Live.
Free Dub MIDI and Drum Loops
I really dig a tasty dub beat. When I put down a dub beat and start playing a dub bass line, life is great. Over the last year I have been making Beat Builders to help me in the studio and just finished up the new Deep Dub Beat Builder. These Beat Builders are a collection of loops in a genre. I make a massive amount of Drum Loops and then create two versions. One with everything together, and another where each part is separated. That way you can drag and drop in your production as well as mix and match other drum loops with their parts. I've packaged up 5 of these full drum loops and their associated solo parts for free. That is 27 Drum Loops in total,, which can be combined in hundreds of ways. I've also thrown in some free MIDI patterns to help you in creating your own palette of beats. Free Micro Glitch Percussion Loops
Sometimes when I am working on a beat I want to add some glitchyness. I feel it adds character and can take an otherwise normal beat and make it cutting edge. Over the years I've made a crap load of glitch loops / samples. I compiled them all together in a new Free/By Donation Sample Library. The Micro Glitch Library is a quick way to drag one of the many minimal percussion loops into your production. You can then play with interesting new rhythmic ideas you might not ever have thought of. The loops include edgy minimal percussion, clear, resonant hits, and mangled glitchy texture.
