Latin Percussion from Vintage Drum Machines
When producing Subaqueous tunes, I love to add rich percussion sounds. It really elevates the track on the dance floor. Over the last few years I find myself repeatedly going back to Latin Percussion sounds. I’ve put together an Ableton Live Drum Rack that features a collection of these samples. There is a twist to it though… All the samples have been taken from Vintage Drum Machines. As much as I love Percussion, I equally love Vintage Drum Machine sounds. This Drum rack is a perfect blend of both. This Free / by Donation live pack includes a Drum Rack and Samples taken from: Alesis HR16 Alesis SR15 EMU Drumulator Roland TR-505 And more It also includes 40 original samples that can be used in any DAW or sampler. The samples were taken from the vintage drum machines. Download the Live Pack and samples below: Download
Live Link is out on Ableton Live 9.6!
Today is the day I have been waiting for. Ableton has updated Live with Link! If you do not know the awesome power of link for collaboration, check this out: This new feature lets you hit the Link Button near your Global Tempo and connect to other devices. It is incredibly stable and easy to use. Here is how easy it is to set up: Connect your computer devices to the same ad hoc or local network. So basically the same internet connection. Open up open the Preferences in Live-> Link/MIDI tab and click on the button next to "Play in time with Link". Now you are on your way to being synced with other programs, apps, and instances of Ableton Live. Grab the new update from Ableton.com to start collaborating. There are a few Apps coming out that will utilize Link, and I hope to see this as a standard.
Getting Creative with Vocal Processing and Effects
Recording beautiful vocals is fantastic, but where I have a lot of fun is being creative with effects to spice the vocals up. I just wrote an article on Processing Vocals in Ableton Live where I talk about the basics of getting a good starting vocal. In this article I am going to take you down the rabbit hole of Vocal Effects, like chorusing, reverse reverb, and other tricks I have learned along the way. For the past 2 weeks I have been working with Heather Christie, aka Cheraki, in the studio recording. We used a Miktek c5 microphone and were able to get some gorgeous recordings. I then processed the vocals to even out levels and clean it up. From there a whole world of possible effects opens up. In this article I am going to be using some of her vocal takes as an example of what is possible. You’ll also get a sneak peak at some new music. Complex Pro: To start I want to show off some Ableton Nerdery. A while ago I did some videos on creatively using warp modes. This is
Vintage Pitched Toms
I love using pitched toms as both basslines as well as an interesting percussion. I have been in the studio working on new tracks and constantly find myself reaching for this collection of pitched Toms. I went ahead and created a new Live Pack for free / by donation of tom samples taken from vintage Drum Machines. These samples were then put into Ableton live in instrument racks so you can pitch the samples up and down. This Free / by Donation live pack includes 4 instruments: MR10 Pitched Toms Drumtracks Pitched Tom TR-808 Pitched Toms Drum Station Pitched Tom It also includes 17 original samples that can be used in any DAW or sampler. Vocal Treatment in Ableton Live
Over the last year I have been working on a new project called Silkdrop. After New Years I was honored to have the chance to work with Heather Christie, aka Cheraki, to record vocals. During our time in the studio I was able to experiment with a lot of techniques in vocal treatment. In this article I am going to share some of the techniques and tips I use for working with vocals and getting them to sound crisp, clear, and upfront. This article is going to be looking at creating a very natural and professional vocal sound from your recordings. We are not going to look into the more creative ways of modulating and morphing vocals(pitching, reverse vocals, and so on). Our objective is for a clean and beautiful mix. After that we can get creative with chorusing and so on. Riding the Volume: There are a few key components that make a really good vocal. One of them is a smooth control of volume. If your singer has great mic technique, like Heather did, then it should be a pretty smooth vocal to start. There might be
